“DK, Donghwan Kam has been collecting names of water since 2019. He first started collecting water names because of his experience of not knowing which bottled water to buy when visiting different supermarkets. The flavors of different names of water were subtly different, and at the same time not so much different. Ansuya Blom, DK’s advisor during his time at Rijksakademie, encouraged and supported him in exploring these sensory experiences of the Same and Different. In 2022, during his residency at Ujazdowski Castle Center for Contemporary Art in Warsaw, he gave the names of water to Seokyung Kim and asked her to visualize them. She created a poster with the names of the water, using the monochrome offset printing method at Drukkerij Raddraaier SSP in Amsterdam. DK was subsequently invited to participate in the Nina bell F. House Museum at the 2022 Singapore Biennale, Natasha, co-curated by Binna Choi, director of Casco Art Institute. For the exhibition, DK handed the names of the water to Lang Lee and asked her to sing the fragmented names of the water as if they were flowing together. Lang Lee recorded the names of the waters in chanting and chirping, then layered the different tracks together into a single track to create an 11-minute, 47-second sound piece. The poster and sound piece were installed next to a pair of water dispensers throughout the exhibition period. Visitors were able to drink the water with two different names. This record was made possible with the generous support of Arts Council Korea and published in collaboration with Derek Hartfield and Het Generiek. Sound mastering was done by De Bong and Bert Scholten. The typeface used in this album cover is Zazeela which is created by tracing artist Marian Zazeela’s handwriting. It was made by Seokyung Kim in 2019.

감동환은 2019년 이래로 물의 이름들을 수집해왔다. 그가 처음 물의 이름들을 모으게 된 계기는 서로 다른 슈퍼마켓을 방문할 때 마다 어떤 이름의 물을 사야 할지 몰라 당황했던 경험과 실제로 서로 다른 이름을 가진 물의 맛들이 아주 미세하게 다르면서도 크게 다르지 않았다는 점 때문이었다. 당시 라익스 아카데미의 어드바이져였던 안수야 블롬은 감동환이 이런 같고다름의 감각경험에 집중할 수 있도록 그를 독려하고 지원해주었다. 2022년 폴란드 바르샤바에 위치한 유재즈도스키 캐슬 레지던시에 참가할 당시 감동환은 김서경에게 물의 이름들을 건네주었고 그것들을 시각화 해달라고 의뢰하였다. 김서경은 물의 이름들을 포스터 형식으로 완성하였으며 이를위해 암스테르담의 Drukkerij Raddraaier SSP에서 1도 오프셋 프린트 방식으로 작업하였다. 그 후 감동환은 캐스코 아트 인스티튜트의 디렉터 최빛나가 코-큐레이트한 2022년 싱가폴 비엔날레 나타샤와 니나 벨 에프 하우스 뮤지엄에 참가하게 되었다. 전시를 위해 감동환은 물의 이름들을 이랑에게 건내주었고 분절된 물의 이름들이 하나로 이어져 흐르듯이 노래해 달라고 의뢰했다. 이랑은 물의이름들을 읖고, 지저귀는 방식으로 녹음한 뒤 서로 다른 트랙들을 하나의 트랙으로 겹쳐 11분 47초의 사운드피스를 완성하였다. 포서트와 사운드피스는 전시기간동안 생수를 제공하는 한 쌍의 정수기 옆에 설치되어 전시/재생 되었으며, 관람객들은 서로 다른 이름을 가진 물들을 마실 수 있었다. 이 음반은 한국문화예술위원회의 지원으로 만들어졌으며 데렉 하트필트가 헷게네릭과 협업하여 출판하였다. 사운드 마스터링은 대봉과 버트 스콜텐이 맡았다. 앨범커버에 쓰여지 영문서체는 2019년 마리안 자질라의 손글씨를 김서경이 필사하여 만든 zazeela이다.”
